Hello, Friends!
I’ve come to rely on the Google to answer most of my most burning questions….what’s the difference between an “About” page and a “Start Here” page, what time is the Seahawks game, etc. But when I asked “what foods help with alcohol recovery”, guess what came up? Zip. Zero.
Ok, I did find some books, like Recovery 2.0 and The Naked Mind (which were super helpful, BTW), but I was hoping for something simpler, something that I could jump off the couch and start doing/using, something with some bullet points. It was my first day sober! My head was swimming with overwhelm, fear and doubt – an avalanche of emotions was ready to unleash at any moment.
In these early days of sobriety, I was definitely NOT able to absorb anything complicated, commit to anything radical (like a celery juice cleanse – come on!), or run all over town looking for the latest super (super expensive) food. I had a full-time job, 2 kids, 2 dogs, going to meetings, participating in countless recovery circles and reading self-help books like nobody’s business. Simplicity became a necessity of sobriety and I were going to become life-long friends.
All I wanted to know was what foods would help to detox my body, manage the impending sugar cravings, keep mood swings under control, reset my neurotransmitters, get out of the addictive cycle and start to feel vibrant and awesome! I envisioned myself as a strong, vibrant older woman, tossing my future grandbabies in the air, laughing, enjoying my family. And I knew that if I wanted to become her….I needed to get to work….fast.
I took it to the extreme and dove headfirst into the world of Nutrition, Cooking, Health & Wellness and Personal Development. Books, courses, Facebook Groups, podcasts, retreats, nutrition school, cooking classes, teaching, coaching, learning, more learning. Along the way, I realized that as an adult child of highly functioning alcoholics, I have been in training for this work all of my life. And it’s time to share all that I have learned to (hopefully) help those who are ready to take back their health and step into their power. So….here are a couple of bullet points to get you started:
- Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning. Your dehydrated – for real. Alcohol does that.
- Get to know and appreciate your kitchen. Take a look around, open the cabinets, say “hi!” Get comfortable in this space, we’re going to be hanging out in there a bunch!
- Eat 1 salad/day. I don’t care if it’s store-bought or comes alongside your chicken teriyaki. Just eat 1…every day. You’ll thank me later.
More to come…ever so much more!
Until next time, my friends,
Kimberley
